SOWNY » What Do These Stations Do About Trudeau's Appearance Now? » July 30, 2020 12:10 am

it's a tough call. carry some, all, or none. whatever you decide, if you want to get listeners in the mood, be sure to include a certain brenda lee hit in your intro.

SOWNY » Regis Philbin dead at 88 » July 26, 2020 10:52 pm

one of the impressive things (to me) about regis is the fact that even in his 80's he remained being a valuable media commodity. in other words, he never succumbed (perhaps it was a gene thing) to the word "elderly".

SOWNY » Regis Philbin dead at 88 » July 25, 2020 6:42 pm

"did regis philbin pass away?"  "yes"  "is that your final answer?"   btw, he had a good run. when i was a kid, i remember regis being joey bishop's "sidekick" on the "joey bishop show". my parents didn't watch that show much... meanwhile, "the merv griffin show" was another story!

SOWNY » Boston radio legend Arnie ‘Woo Woo’ Ginsburg dead at 93 » June 30, 2020 2:50 pm

what a legend! memories of my childhood in boston. i had a chance to have a long conversation with arnie (around 6 years ago). he was in his 80's at the time. it was an honor for me.  btw, his name came up in the payola scandal, back in the day, but his easy-going demeanor helped remove him from the feds radar. when he was hired by wmex, boston (where he made his mark on rock-n-roll radio)  he didn't want a salary, he just wanted a piece (around 25%) of the advertising revenue. as a result, he was earning more than most jocks in similar markets. i'll play my cruisn' 1961 lp in his memory.

i'm friends with a couple of people who had prominent roles on that show (one of them also co-created the show with steve smith). in my opinion the red green show was a hit while smith & smith was... well, it helped stations fill some can-con time.

SOWNY » How is this legal? » June 8, 2020 6:36 pm

i'm still seeing/hearing a lot of "my pillow ad"... on tv.

SOWNY » Is This The Dumbest Product Advertised On Radio Since My Pillow? » June 4, 2020 1:26 pm

per inquiry advertising is how some stations chose to utilize available advertising inventory (use it or lose it). a station has to have faith in the advertiser to be truthful when providing the amount of inquiries.  it's a stratedgy than can conflict with programming by way of the products being sold and/or the repetition of the ads. some stations also create bta plans (bta - best times available) where advertisers gamble on getting good air-times (for their spots) at a reduced flat rate. in my experience, these plans are often utilized by stations that are having sales "issues".

"reaction" videos have been very popular, on the internet, for some time now. it was just a matter of time before broadcasters would try to capitalize on their popularity.

SOWNY » The Practical Joke On Radio That Changed Major League Baseball » April 28, 2020 10:43 am

as an aside, boston's "the sport's huddle" (eddie, mark, and jim) was a great show! it combined sports knowledge with bostonial style humor (yes, there is such a thing).  it was a weekly show that was hosted by 3 guys who had day jobs out-side of broadcasting (i'm not familiar with the producer mentioned in the story) . they were unconventional (including not allowing callers to start their call with the phrase  "what do you think?"). despite their funny side, they knew sports. eddie andleman was the main guy and ended up commentating an over 100 radio stations, including new york's wfan.  it's been said that "the sports huddle" was one of the country's first sports call-in talk shows (started in 1969)... personally, "the sports huddle" made sunday night fun (when they were on whdh)!  footnote: the story mentioned reds  manager russ nixon. nixon had a connection to boston (and the red sox). when i was a kid, russ was the catcher for the sox.

SOWNY » wtf, roger's sportsnet? » March 27, 2020 7:21 pm

i just saw something, on roger's sportsnet that made me say, wtf?

a few minutes ago, they (sportsnet) aired wwe wrestling matches. were they old classic matches? nope, they were created during this current pandemic! no crowds, just wrestlers going full contact (as many as 3 at a time). talk about irresponsible! i can just imagine the length of the liability waivers (for participants and production crew). meanwhile, closer to home, what are some of the canadian "fans" going to think? "well, it can't be all that bad out there!" yes, not everybody "get's it", when it comes to the hazards (individually and to the public at large) of getting too near people during a pandemic, but you'd think rogers would know! many of us are doing the right thing, while a national network (owned by rogers) is promoting the wrong thing! ok, so there were warnings displayed...  warnings dealing with the violence depicted. why couldn't they issue another warning... about the stupidity depicted? i guess a (somewhat) sport's based soap opera is considered to be essential... i guess.

SOWNY » Would You Take A Pay Cut To Save Your Radio Job? » March 27, 2020 2:56 pm

in my opinion, there are too many factors to consider, before answering. if you're talking "economics" it depends on  how much you're presently making, then again, most people (thanks to consumer credit) live above their means. imho, the real question should be: "are you willing to make lifestyle sacrifices to keep your radio job?" this reminds me of the days (back in the '70's) when radio/broadcasting schools (not the for-profit ones) would ask, during the initial screening process, "would you be willing to move to newfoundland in order to work in radio?" i was asked that question (and said "yes"). it was all for not, since i scored a smalltown radio gig (in my canadian "hometown") before the school term started.

let's hope this doesn't diminish the chances of the public being updated (in a timely fashion). meanwhile, costco workers (including my wife) are still serving the public... however... changes have been made (including the removal of the sit down food courts) to reduce the chance of virus exposure. not being independently wealthy sucks!

SOWNY » Have You Discovered Podcasts Yet? » March 11, 2020 10:44 am

i'm a big yellow board old timer and i've been listening to podcasts for over a decade. i also host one (and make a few bucks from doing so). i've been quoted on a few podcasts, including gilbert gottfried's (proof that it's easy to make him laugh).... not to mention hosting a few streamed weekly music shows. the internet can offer a lot of potential (without the restrictions). thanks to (the late) marc chambers advise, i've had a home (broadcast quality) studio for 20 years (or more).

i remember when howard launched it (after departing from bn). i also remember when we both were at an east coast broadcaster conference (a.a.b.) and he had to go up and give an after dinner talk about his new service (that had yet to be launched). despite his usual outgoing personality, his days as a broadcast & technology contributor (the magazine's official photographer, and the fact that ingred was there too, he seemed to be more than a little pensive.
