SOWNY » Family Circle magazine shuts down after 87 » Today 4:00 pm

The media industry is in a state flux and news of Family Circle magazine folding after 87 years is further proof, that we're not in Kansas anymore Toto...

Here is more on the demise of this supermarket staple...

SOWNY » Attendance is dropping at the movies and here is what Ang Lee is doing » Yesterday 9:16 pm

Media is going through massive changes, audiences are going hither and yon for content and yes even the local movie house is losing market share...

Ang Lee is the director of the new movie Gemini Man with Will Smith...(Fresh Prince of Bel Air fame) and he is using technology to lure movie goers back in.

The techno trick is using more frames per second...can you say "mind blowing"?

For Gemini Man, Lee is once again pushing technological boundaries. The movie was captured at 120 frames a second. In Canada, it will be offered in 3D at 60 frames per second and also in 2D at the standard 24 frames per second.

My questions are this...have you noticed you don't go to the movies as often as you used too? Then part 2 is, will this type of thing used to film Gemini Man get you back in your aisle seats at Cineplex?

Chime away!

Here is more on the story too!

What about Babsocks? If the Leafs lose in round one of the playoffs, they will and can use his socks for cheap by then if that happens!

SOWNY » This hour of Prime Time Sports is brought to you by Pizza Nova. WTH? » October 15, 2019 8:54 pm

I heard this promo on day two of the new line-up on the Fan 590 just before Tim and Sid today at 4:53 pm. Someone has to have heard that and make a change.

Prime time ended Friday...and for the promo to be running 2 days in for a big market radio station is a bit bush league...

SOWNY » Steve Simmons is going into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame media.. » October 15, 2019 8:48 pm

I agree, I love the CFL, it is Canadian, it has an amazing history and even though football in Toronto has waned for a variety of reasons, it is big in Montreal, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Saskatchewan and Calgary...

Congrats to Steve be recognized as someone who did good work. This is a nice thing to have happen  in any field and it is big for him and his family...

SOWNY » Today officially marks the new line-up on the Fan 590 » October 14, 2019 5:58 am

Gone is Prime Time sports, Jeff Blair and crew move to 2 pm...Tim and Sid are on from 5-7 pm...the new morning show has been airing for a few weeks, the good show is starting at 9 am and it is Hockey Central at noon for 2 hours...

Now, with all of these do you think the ratings will be for the Fan 590 will be in the next book or even the next few books?

If I am a betting man, I expect a decline...what do you think?

Here is the link to the last Prime Time Sports show on mentioned, in a previous post, I am going to miss it...and although I am okay with Tim and Sid, I am not overly compelled to tune in as I was with Prime Time sports...

It is funny, it is the little things about the show I will miss, like the theme music, the kinds of guests, the hosts (I do miss Bob, (but maybe it was time to part ways) and the variety of co-hosts he had)...and although the current co-hosts will be on air, there will be a different flavour to the Fan from 5-7 from here on in...

Here again is the link to the last episode of Prime Time from Friday with Gord Stellick and Stephen Brunt...also Michael Grange and Elliotte Freedman join in on the "Friday Round Table"...

According to the Globe and Mail, Barton will not be involved in the lawsuit...

Still, the timing of this is pretty poor and if you're a Conservative how can you trust the CBC's journalistic integrity?

Shite just got real...the CBC is taking the Conservative Party of Canada to a silly election this is...

Here is more on the story

My question is, with about a week to go in this election, should the CBC have waited? I don't think making the news with this one week before we go to the polls is such a wise move and to me it seems a little politically motivated...

What says you?

SOWNY » Happy Thanksgiving Big Yella! » October 11, 2019 5:11 am

Who can forget this famous scene? Wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving, enjoy the weekend, family, friends and the Turkey too!

As we reflect on the weekend, what was one moment on air, you'd like to forget, but as you look back on it, you can now laugh about it? Share away!

For me it was when a key guest did not show up for an interview, it was an hour long talk show and I had a 30 minute segment arranged, I kind of panicked, but managed to pull it off by calling a colleague last minute and then opening the lines to callers...

One other was when I did weekend news way, way back when and a story off the wire, from Texas mentioned Mike Hunt as one of the perpetrators in this news story, remembering Radio 101 from Seneca, I quickly used Michael and not (fast thinking award for sure)...

So what's your story? Share away!

SOWNY » Tomorrow is the end of Prime Time Sports on the FAN » October 10, 2019 7:49 pm

Jeff Blair and Stephen Brunt hosted the "Penultimate" edition of Prime Time Sports today...on the holiday Monday Jeff Blair et al, will move to the 2-5 time slot.

I for one will miss this show, it has been a fave of mine to listen to on a drive home for years, thanks to Bobcat for putting it on the map and I haven't minded Jeff Blair as a fill in...

The one thing I will miss is the theme music for it.

Here is a link to listen in to today's 2nd last show...

SOWNY » Move over Ben, your wife Jessica Mulroney is hosting a TV show too! » October 10, 2019 7:39 pm

In a joint effort with Netflix and CTV, Jessica Mulroney enters the TV fray too as host of a wedding show. The premise is it takes weddings that ended as disasters and Jessica comes in to save the day to give the couple a proper spectacular wedding...

It is calls I do/Redo.

I got married once, I don't know if I want to re-do that event...

My question is will you watch? Does this kind of programming turn your crank? Will draw in ratings?

The jury is out.

SOWNY » Op-ed piece in the Toronto Star-it states our TV biz falling behind » October 7, 2019 6:52 pm

The Canadian TV producing industry is seriously lagging behind and could in fact lead to it's demise...this the argument laid out by writer.contributor, Jill Gollick about our content and the kinds of shows we are turning out.

Here is the link, but my question is this, simply put, do you agree with this point of view...?

SOWNY » Chom FM Montreal turns 50 officially on October 28th » October 7, 2019 9:16 am

50 years of Rock in La Belle Province...this month marks the 50th anniversary of Chom started with host Doug Pringle on October 28th, playing Here comes the Sun by the  Beatles...

Having grown up in Ottawa, we could get Chom FM on our radio's with was exciting to listen to back in the early 70's, more rock and less commercial than the AM stations we had in the Nation's Capital at the time.

It is really quite amazing that the station has survived format changes, a plethora of hosts and new artists and stays true to it's origins.

50 years is quite an accomplishment...

Here is a link with more on the anniversary and a YouTube clip of Doug Pringle on air...

Enjoy and share any memories you might have with CHOM FM!

SOWNY » Metroland newspaper in Niagara states the print media is relevant! » October 6, 2019 2:27 pm

I am not so sure about this article, I don't know if print is so relevant...but in yesterdays edition of Metrolands "Niagara This Week" the article makes a case for the relevancy and success of newspapers in today's changing world of content...

The article states that millennials and us older adults react and engage with newspapers, both from the content and with the ads...

I am not so sure if this is on the up and what is your take? Do you agree with what is being said in this article or is a little "Tooting of our own horn" happening here?

Here is the article.

SOWNY » Have You Ever Had A Nightmare About Radio? » October 6, 2019 2:23 pm

OMG! RA!  Yes, I had my own radio show for 7 years...on the first ever show, the producer came in with 3 minutes to air, he smelled of booze, there were technical errors throughout the show. I was not happy, I had put a lot of work into getting the show off the ground, selling it, (air-time) arranging guests, planning it etc.

On the Thursday before the 2nd show (which then aired Saturday morning from 9-10 am), I had a dream that I slept in and was late for the show, I just had a melt down in the dream and didn't end up going into the studio, I quit, I just quit in the dream.

Needless to say, the reality was I did go in, we did week 2 and 7 years later we did week 370...

But, boy that dream was vivid and real...

Thanks RA and Jody for your making this chat board awesome!

SOWNY » A social media Tweet by the "Donald" helps a Canadian Rock Band » October 4, 2019 7:44 pm

Say it isn't true, but a tweet by Donald Trump, er...the President, has actually helped Canadian Rock Band Nickelback.

This proves social media has a major impact and as the late Marshall McLuhan once said, "it is not the medium it's the message", maybe it should be, "it's not the medium, but the messenger instead".

Like him or not, when Trump Tweets, things tend to take place, like Nickelback's career seeing a  sudden surge! (Oy the aliteration)

Here is more on this story and that social media has a major impact, depending on who is behind the messaging...

On a closing note, I was never a fan of this band, maybe the next Prime Minister can re-negotiate our free trade agreement and Canada can throw Nickelback in as a bonus!!

Have a good weekend Big Yella!

SOWNY » Me thinks Roger's will change the Blue Jay's direction this off-season » October 3, 2019 5:02 am

Rogers Media cannot be pleased with this years on field results, yes, it was a re-building year and it was to be expected...but the team had over 580,000 fewer fans come out to games this past 2019 regular season.

Baseball attendance in general was down slightly this year and according to earlier reports back in July so were T.V. ratings for baseball.

For those on Big Yella who are sports fans, I'd expect some more off season wheeling and dealing for the Blue Jays, because I am not sure that the fan base that was so "into it" a few years ago, will buy into another 2 years of losing records and mediocre signing.

I also don't expect Rogers (the ownership group) to stand idly by as well.

Here is more on baseball's plight...

I kind of like Canadian Comedy Shows, even though some are lame...I mean who could forget the Trouble with Tracy!

But shows like Air Farce, Wayne and Shuster, Second City, This Hour and Rick Mercer Report, were quite funny, although from a quality production point of view they did lack that polish that American Comedy shows had.

Here is a look at how Canadian's Shaped our Comedic landscape...

Enjoy the read...

Oh and for a little fun, here is one of my fave Canadian Comedy Show bits...

SOWNY » An interesting look at how people get their election news » October 1, 2019 4:16 pm

Pete Toms writes in the Ottawa Citizen how Millennials get their election news versus us over 45 (somethings) get our election news.

As you can imagine, the younguns are going to social media and us older farts are using traditional media...not to mention getting the candidates brochures in the mail.

I was getting emails and texts from my local Conservative candidate, I unsubscribed and blocked both approaches.

But, this election the candidates and parties are using all media platforms strategically.

I tend to agree with Pete Toms as he suggests he's a dinosaur and tends to use traditional media...I still like the CBC scrums, at issue panels and Power and Politics...I find for me, that, that is the more credible election news media I can get.

Here is more on this in the Ottawa Citizen's article published today...

The Juno's are coming back to Toronto and the Scotiabank Arena on March 28th, 2020...this event is good for our music biz...we have come a long way since the Juno's were created by Stan and Walt at RPM Magazine...

I remember Terry Jacks, Gordon Lightfoot, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and Anne Murray...that was about it for CanCon...but then BTO, Fludd (Cousin Mary) a Foot in Cold Water, the Guess Who...began to make an impact...

Our industry has grown so much is always good see Canadian music artists come together for a bit of a love fest aka the Juno Awards.

In my day we watched Hockey Night in Canada on Saturday Night's at 8 pm...and collected Opee-Chee Hockey cards with the amazing gum!!!

Oh and we'd read the Ottawa Journal sports pages to see if your team won the night before, but that was about it for hockey news and reporting... (I grew up in Ottawa)

The NHL is releasing a series of 3 new hockey podcasts this season, plus you can watch a game 3 nights a week, watch Hockey Central at Noon or Leafs Lunch or the Leafs Channel, the NHL Channel, get Hockey News, download it, stream it, You Tube it on your mobile device...or in a bar..(jeesh cue a Dr. Seuss book) ...(In your car, or at a bar, you can watch hockey wherever you are)

So, now the NHL is launching a few new podcasts for you to tap into, just in case you haven't had enough hockey...

Here is more on the story

My question this overload and with all of this content does it diminish the value of the product and the appeal of watching hockey all together?

My feeling is absolutely yes, but what's your take Big Yella?

Congrats to all...they not only impacted Canadian air waves...but the fabric of Canadian Culture...I still remember Marc "Mes Oui" Denis playing Andy Kim and grooving to Chilliwack in High School...where lumberjack jackets and Greb Kodiaks were a fashion statement!

I am going to go and YouTube "Rock me Gently" now for old times sake... lol
