Agreed, it's a shame overall...but these are the times we live in...bean counters and shareholders need to find as much cash as possible...I don't know why they can't record a recent and dedicated 3-minute TSN sportscast and slap into local supper and late night CTV newscasts?...I didn't think Bell was that cheap but once again they prove me wrong....I'm also quite surprised that TSN/Sportsnet still have so many hour long highlight shows?...what's the point when instant replays, news and highlights appear online literally the second after they happen live on multiple platforms...ESPN, etc in the USA have cut a lot of these highlight shows and replaced them with talking head sports commentary and round table opinion programs...seems TSN/Sportsnet still like to showcase their teleprompter reading 'talent' that try to come up with some witty comedy routines while they roll the highlights...this mostly comes off as just plain lame...

Should politicians, actors, athletes also not suggest getting a Covid shot that can literally save the lives of others and helps protects people you share your community with?...I don't see a difference if a DJ or talk show host recommends it...this reminds me of the 'shut up and dribble' Fox News crowd that complains when they hear something they don't agree with and then tells the messenger to stick to their own lane

One thing I learned being in this business is no one has a monopoly on 'being cool'...everyone has a best before date...enjoy the time you have and if you want to keep going best of luck but know the audience you had are usually the ones that grow old, lame and dated with you...if you're good with that then that's fine...unless you specialize in polarizing views (Limbaugh) or did it really well first (Stern) or work for a station that plays a popular music format for a long time (no matter what a DJ tells you people listen to a music station for its tunes not its talent)...time always wins and generations move on...

Here's the chart that's referred to, under the headline Perceived Importance of Various Broadcasting Platforms

Thanks!

I could use the data below from the same survey to make a 4-minute YouTube video that is virtually opposite to what Post Media and it's US ownership overlords want you to believe:

Commercial radio listeners are generally satisfied with the listening experience (47% 8-10 on 10 pt scale) and impressions are strongest for the availability of programming in the listeners’ preferred language (66%) and the quality (48%) and frequency of information (45%).

Satisfaction with the listening experience is very consistent among those who report listening to each platform- highest for streaming music services (54%), followed by CBC Radio/ ICI Radio-Canada (48%), podcasts (47%), commercial AM/FM radio (47%) and satellite radio (42%). Few are dissatisfied with the listening experience across all platforms.

Satisfaction with commercial radio is considerably lower for the variety of programming (35% 8-10 on 10 pt scale), diversity of songs, genres or artists (32%) and promotion of Canadian artists (30%) and most believe that commercial radio is too focused on popular music (51% strongly/ somewhat agree).

The most common suggested areas for improvement include having fewer commercials (43%), more diverse musical content (32%), more local content (20%) and more timely news coverage (18%).

Opinions are more mixed about the quality of programming (41%) and the availability of local content (39%). Qualitatively, some believe that commercial radio is a good source of local ne

It's Post Media so the probability of cherry picking results to keep step with their agenda is very high...also things must have done a complete 180 in less than 4 years:

Only 14% think CBC funding should be decreased from current levels….Half (49%) of Canadians think CBC should continue to rely on advertising to fund its programming operations; one-in-three (36%) think CBC funding should be increased and ads eliminated, while 10% think CBC funding should be frozen and ads eliminated…’

The Canadian Women's national soccer team played the USA last night...game ended 1-0 for USA....the game wasn't on any traditional TV channel....my issue here is that more of these games are being 'televised/streamed on-line or through pay per view (OneSoccer, DAZN, etc...)...I get the 'happy capitalism' angle of supply and demand and that some of these games are used as revenue generators beyond current cable and satellite fees...for example a Champions League soccer match in Europe or a cricket league match in India...but last night Rogers Sportsnet was showing the same NHL game between 2 US teams on 4 of its 5 more accessible channels while Bell Media's TSN was showing the Toronto Raptors game on 3 of its 5...it seems 100% inexcusable that considering the current availability of Canadian-based sports channels that every form of Canadian national team game (hockey, soccer, baseball, rugby, women or men's, exhibition or competitive, etc) should be televised by these networks as a mechanism of entertainment and support....it's like a form of CANCON for supporting Canadian athletes, their games and their families....curious as to what I'm missing here other than possibly more ad revenue generation and that it costs less to simply carry a feed of a Columbus vs San Jose hockey game?...bottom line always trumps patriotism.

Here's what resonates with me...it's clear the Feds will further relax foreign ownership on media companies to keep the cash flowing....Bell, Rogers, Shaw/Corus are thinking about more ways to 'work together' more easily - this means more media consolidation and even fewer jobs...this points to the further 'weaponization' of the message through traditional media portals...whether that be liberal, conservative, socialism, fascism, etc...I use Post Media as a prime example...their newspapers are currently 2/3 owned by a U.S asset management company with close ties to the GOP....do you think these guys give a rats ass about truth and facts?...the bottom line for them IS the bottom line....agenda, control, influence and shareholder profits with misinformation as part of its arsenal...

The NFL will probably get whatever it wants - Sports Illustrated doesn't think the ratings matter at this stage either...

RATINGS STILL SUPER

Some point to the Super Bowl viewership decline—“only” 92 million people watched—as evidence of the NFL loosening its grip as, by far, the most popular sport in the country. To those I say: Good luck with that.

The Super Bowl’s lost viewership during the pandemic is far less than the lost viewership of other sports and their pinnacle programming this year, as noted here:

Event Decline in Viewership

  • Super Bowl 9%
  • World Series 30%
  • NBA Finals 49%
  • NHL Finals 61%

From this perspective, the Super Bowl’s decline by only 9% illustrates the immense popularity of the sport.

More importantly, does any of it matter? Will any network use this as some kind of leverage in their upcoming negotiations with the NFL? Of course not.

The new media deals, as I have been saying, will be massive. There will be the traditional network suitors—NBC, CBS, Fox, ABC/ESPN—and streaming suitors such as Google, Yahoo, Twitter, Facebook, Amazon, etc. There is no more powerful programming for mass viewership than NFL programming; both the league and the networks know it. A slight Super Bowl ratings dip, especially in this environment, will have zero effect on that.

Even in modern times these Rogers cullings cut deep...this paragraph from Broadcast Dialogue only touches the surface....read past and it outlines restructuring which basically gives people spared the axe more duties and fancy titles which I'm willing to bet don't come with the pay hikes (if any?) that match the new job descriptions.

Rogers Sports & Media has extended the reach of the Roz & Mocha Show to more markets in the wake of last week’s cross-country layoffs. Originating from Toronto’s KiSS 92.5 (CKIS-FM), the show is now airing on KiSS 100.5 (CHUR-FM) North Bay, KiSS 99.3 (CKGB-FM) Timmins, and KiSS 100.5 (CHAS-FM) Sault Ste. Marie, bumping the local morning shows on those stations. In North Bay, staff cuts included afternoon drive host Cody Belanger as well as newsroom staffers Richard Coffin and Bob Coles.
Former morning show host Kevin Oschefski moves to afternoons. In Timmins, 99.3 KiSS morning host Mark Kinsman and afternoon host Tyler Cropley were released, in addition to program director Amanda Dyer, who had been with the station since 2007, as well as news anchor/reporter Alain Quevillon. In Sault Ste. Marie, Zenga McCurdy is now helming middays across all three stations, while his former morning co-host Casey MacDonald moves to afternoon drive. Former Sudbury-based KiSS network midday host Turner Gentry has been released. Ottawa’s KISS 105.3 (CISS-FM) also underwent layoffs, including PD Anthony DeRossi.
Other station cuts in Ontario impacted K-ROCK (CIKR-FM) Kingston where personalities Sideshow and Eilish Sullivan were among the casualties. In London, commercial/imaging producer Andy Goddard was let go, in addition to creative writer Sarah Drapeau.
