TORONTO -- In what it describes as a "significant" restructuring, Global News is cutting some of its workforce.

The Canadian news organization owned by Corus Entertainment Inc. confirmed it has laid off staff in an email to The Canadian Press, but declined to provide exact numbers.

Corus executive vice-president of broadcast networks Troy Reeb attributed the layoffs to challenges faced by the news industry in recent years, including regulatory restraints, a lack of government support, advertising losses and most recently, COVID-19.

NHL would not have secured Canadian hub cities (Toronto and Edmonton) if it did not already clear its personnel to be able to cross the border....just as the hockey players were...NBC will use Canadians for some production work for sure...especially in Edmonton...key point here is ad dollars...Rogers will certainly get paid as Canadian NHL rights holder

I hosted and produced live radio programs on Saturdays for 6 years (2001 thru 2006) on 640 Toronto and 610 CKTB...for 4 of those years (2003 to 2006) my shows were the only live programs that I can remember that weren't paid time, syndicated or a weekday re-roll...it was sad then and it's only gotten worse...

A few sacred things left were the inability to reproduce a natural sounding human voice and to draw/animate real people for movies/TV....but in the last 10 years it's gotten nearly impossible to tell the difference in some cases...see the latest images in video games out there...this speech tech is only going to get better...I'm guessing in 20 years we won't need human actors of any kind anymore....scary indeed...

I agree with many that things in general these days have gotten out of hand in terms of sensitivity and swinging the pendulum too far to one side or another...but in this case Mulroney dug her own grave...after reading a few more takes it seems pretty clear that she was triggered and then lashed out...alluding to her influence and how it could be used to negatively and fiscally hurt he other party...what sunk her is that she publicly apologized and then immediately after sent a private note saying that she will explore libel legal action against her...how honestly stupid and privileged can you be...this would be an idiotic move at any time but now?...read the room girl!

Couldn't care less for this drama...royal connection or not...I just find it sad funny.

CTV has taken down Jessica's I Do, Redo TV show website page so I'm interested to see if they fire her outright...and like Pat Foran never doing a Consumer Alert story on CTV Toronto about Bell's horrid customer service practices...I doubt CTV News or Jessica's brother Ben will cover this on CTV's highly watched E-talk program that airs right after the 6pm news...

Firing the number one morning show host then getting killed by that host in the ratings for a year before bringing her back with a huge pay increase will be what I remember.  That, and taking a successful CHR, turning it into rhythmic CHR that no one wanted, then flipping it to the unsuccessful Jack format for years before moving it back to CHR after that hole had already been filled will be the other.  That is astoundingly poor judgement.

This is correct...if any manager in any other sector did the equivalent their career would have stopped cold right there...this is Rogers promoting from within cause it's easier (and likely cheaper) for them...the devil you know...

Rogers will (or has likely done) try to get some cash back from the NHL for that horrible rights deal considering the 2019/2020 season has been postponed...I'm sure there is a clause that states 'season cancelled' as opposed to 'season postponed' so the NHL doesn't have to give anything back right away...they will continue to raise internet fees...people are using less TV and more internet...and like Corus, they will look to share/syndicate more radio programs nationally...cheaper to put a show somewhere else than hire people to do it in a local market...

OTTAWA, April 8, 2020 /CNW/ - The Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ) is disturbed to hear from journalists who say their stories are being vetted to ensure advertisers are kept happy.

While the CAJ cannot confirm the practice is widespread, several journalists have reported that their news stories are being reviewed to ensure they do not contain anything that would offend the business community, in the interest of preventing ad losses.

Sales staff have also reportedly offered favourable coverage as incentives for advertising packages.

Facebook Inc. on Monday pledged US$100 million in financing and advertising spending to support news organizations, including local publishers in the United States, reeling from pressure due to the coronavirus pandemic.

News publishers, especially print media, have taken the brunt as many advertisers pulled their marketing budgets to rein in costs because of virus-related uncertainty.

The federal government says it will help broadcasters deal with the fallout from COVID-19 by waiving $30 million usually paid by the industry to support the operations of Canada’s telecommunications regulator.

As a result, the government will provide funding to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission so it won’t request payment for Part I licence fees for the 2020-21 fiscal year.

There is absolutely nothing concrete they can do to mitigate this disaster....you can try documentaries, live-interviews, guest hosts, re-runs of classic games, etc...but sports media is based on what's live and in the now...they better hope this ends soon...another interesting take is how much cash must the various leagues give back to the tv/radio stations for broadcasting rights?...is it a percentage of games not played, shown, seen, etc...do they have to?...be interesting to see how that clause works in the contracts...

Most folks don't like radio commercials or paying for stuff like subscriptions - add repetitive, shitty 400 song playlists or over the top talk radio bullshit and you get the picture - people want more personal choice and each generation gets used to the new tech available to do this  - so you're seeing people hooking up their phone to the car to play their own 3000 song playlist or download a podcast they can hear when they like or listen to an internet station that's free - it's a very slow process for sure but it's moving and radio is lobbying the necessary players as hard as oil and gas companies to remain viable
