And Q certainly had a good book last rating. Now last time was not typical with all of the changes in the marketplace with the pandemic, but Q107 seems to have found itself over the past while. It will be interesting to see if everything holds for the September book. Sounds like weekday mornings are pretty solid. All those TV spots must be helpful.

The Jim Pattison Group is a major radio broadcaster in Western Canada with 46 radio stations.  Last week they announced layoffs and buyouts due to the falling advertising from the COVID-19 pandemic.  They also announced network mid day radio programs with five different formats.  More from Broadcast Dialogue...Five network midday shows have risen out of last week’s COVID-19-related staff reductions at Jim Pattison Broadcast Group (JPBG).The company announced Friday that it had offered early retirement packages to 30 and laid off another 40 staff to minimize the impact of pandemic revenue challenges that saw Q2 2020 revenues at half what they were for the same quarter last year.Network midday shows are one of the ways the broadcast group will be maximizing talent, starting this week, across its 46 stations encompassing Rock, Classic Hits, Hot AC, Country Metro and Country Non-Metro formats.Many of the hosts are longterm JPBG on-air personalities, who were previously heard on individual stations. Each network show will also be overseen by a Lead Program Director, responsible for show direction, host development and communication with affiliate PDs.

According to wiki there are 7 high school radio stations in Canada, mostly Ontario.
Closest to us would be CHOP FM 102.7 Newmarket Pickering College
RAV FM 90.7 Thornhill Vaughan Secondary
PHS Panther Radio  Internet Only Preston High school Cambridge
CKVI FM 91.9 Kingston Collegiate

I thought that Neil McNeil High School had a radio station but they weren't listed.  I think they offered a television program at one point.  Lots of TV and radio people in the Toronto area graduated from Neil McNeil including one John Candy.

The radio stations in Kitchener/Waterloo have a competition for Oktoberfest songs.  The Beat 91.5 usually has something pretty good.  Here is their offering from a few years back, a take off of Pumped Up Kicks...

Are we sure that all stations have the alert at the exact same time?  I noticed that on TV there can be about a minute to 90 sec. difference on a few channels. I am wondering if the same holds true for radio.  Also the graphics are not always identical on TV either.

Corus Radio has announced that Willy in the Morning, the Rock 101 (CFMI-FM) Vancouver-based morning show that expanded to Q107 (CILQ-FM) Calgary last year, will also be heard on Edmonton’s CHUCK @ 92.5 (CKNG-FM), starting later this month.“The Willy in the Morning team is known for their sharp-wit, sense of humour and great energy,” said Ronnie Stanton, Regional Program Director, Western Canada, in a release. “We can’t wait to introduce the show to CHUCK listeners on August 24.” CHUCK @ 92.5 has been without a morning show since earlier this year when the station dropped syndicated Seattle morning show, Brooke & Jubal (now Brooke & Jeffrey). The Willy in the Morning team, helmed by Willy Percy, Kim Seale and Alece Anderson, will air on CHUCK @ 92.5 from 6 – 9 a.m. weekday mornings. Together for the last seven years, the highly-rated show helped lead Rock 101 to a 14.3% share with women 25-54 in the Spring 2020 PPM ratings. The station posted an overall 8.1 share, 12+, while Q107 garnered just 4.4% market share. CHUCK @ 92.5 finished the last ratings period with a 3.9 share, 12+.     Story courtesy Broadcast Dialogue.

I noticed there are a lot of differences in the top tens in the chart between CKVN and CKLG.  CKVN has Michael Jackson Got to Be There as #5 and doesn't show on LG.  Aretha Franklin with Rock Steady #10 on CKVN again not charted on CKGL.  LG has The Grass Roots, Two Divided by Love as #7 on their chart and it doesn't show on CKVN.

Both charts had lots of cancon but 5 Man Electrical Band and Lighthouse were not on both, along with Pagliaro as mace pointed out.

Proof that Top 40 stations actually didn't always play the same songs, even in the Top Ten.There were always lots of differences in the music between CHUM, CFTR and CKOC.  CHUM was usually a little heavier than TR and CKOC and definitely more than Billboard which tended to have more Adult Contemporary and MOR music in their top 40.

That article has a lot of mistakes in it.  Didn't really read it that closely when I found it.  The company was never called CHUM Records, and Pagliaro's album on MUCH was originally called CHLP 5001 and was recorded primarily at Toronto Sound Studio and partially at Apple Studios in London, not Abbey Road.

The CHUM owned MUCH Records was around from 1970 until late 1974, they also had a few other sub labels like Sweet Plum, Fleur, and Much International.  Altogether the company released about 100 singles and albums with Pagliaro, April Wine and Copperpenny being the most successful acts. April Wine's albums and singles never appeared on the MUCH label but they were signed to Much Productions for their first three albums.   Notice how the MUCH Records logo is very similar to what 1050 Chum was using in the early 70's.

Always wondered how competing radio stations and companies felt about playing music from a record label that was owned by their competitor.

Looking at the US network ratings for last night is kind of scary.  And believe it or not some of the numbers are actually up from one week ago!

Winners for the night?  A rerun of America's Funniest Home Videos and 60 Minutes.  Fox didn't have one show that had over 1 million viewers 2+.  Granted all of the shows on FOX  were repeats and we are in the dregs of summer, but a lot of people are still staying home and watching lots of TV.  Just not much from the Big Four.. Even sports didn't seem to draw that well.

Doubt if the recorded numbers will change the final tally that much especially with repeats and sports.

Sort of interesting since St. Constant is within the Montreal urban area.  So this will be two AM operations in the Montreal region going dark.  One because of financial difficulty and they surrendered their license and the other who has been in non compliance for years and having a license expire at the end of the month.

Maniwaki CFOR is FM with a rock format, but the town itself is only 4,000 people so the two AM stations in Montreal actually may have more of a chance of coming back since of where they are located.

Francophone Gold/Oldies maybe??  English oldies have been tried in Montreal without much success but a station playing 60% french oldies and 40% english oldies with  news and possibly a talk show through the week.  Almost like a francophone version of Zoomer!  980 was 50,000 watts daytime and 10,000 night.

They likely selected Port Elgin since both communities are in Bruce County and small towns so likely better for common regional news coverage.  Bayshore usually does a good job as far as local news is concerned.  Owen Sound being the largest community is also in Grey County and Owen Sound radio tends to focus more on the city and Grey County.

CFPS The Beach already covers most of Bruce County and the repeater will fill in the very top of the Bruce Peninsula and into Manitoulin Island.

darcyh is correct that CFPS initially was a repeater for CFOS when it signed on in 1978.  However they always had a bureau and office in Port Elgin with two news people to cover the Port Elgin/Southampton/Sauble area.

Bayshore usually has a mix of newer people in broadcasting and more experienced, retired or semi retired people on and off of the air.  They were considered a great training ground and had many people that went on to larger markets like John Robertson, Norm Perry, Heather Hiscox, Janis Mackey Frayer, Cheryl Hickey, and others.

If I was on the commission I would let them fry.  Both of these companies have had many chances over the years.   Note of correction, neither of the licenses were pulled.  Both  expire on August 31 2020 and aren't being renewed. Doesn't sound like either company came for the hearings for renewal and didn't do any paperwork, also never produced any financial statements.   The CRTC almost never pulls a license before it expires.

Apparently CJMS and CFOR (who have different owners) have had problems for years and made no effort to help themselves or the situation they were in.  In the case of CJMS they didn't even show up for hearings as far back as 2013.  That tells me they don't put much value on their business or the privilege and responsibility of running a radio station.

There are other responsible individuals and companies that would value running a broadcast operation in these two communities and I am sure it won't be long before new, professional and better stations are up and running.

The new Tobermory rebroadcast station is going to be called The Wave but CFPS is called The Beach. Wonder if there is a name change planned for CFPS.  Northern Bruce Peninsula is growing but not quickly and there are other radio stations available from Owen Sound, and Wingham.   I am sure listeners will appreciate some local content from The Wave.

Most of Bayshore stations are more or less stand alone.  Some of the smaller outlets like Goderich have some simulcasting but they are local during the day.  Evenings and weekends some simulcasting between their like formatted stations.

Blocking out future competition? Time will tell, both Port Elgin and Goderich have competing stations in town for these communities of only 7-8,000.  Northern Bruce has a permanent population of about 4,500.

Bayshore Broadcasting's CFPS in Port Elgin has been approved for a rebroadcaster for Tobermory at the tip of the Bruce Peninsula. The new station will be the 10th for Bayshore and will be known as The Wave.

Initially The Wave will be a rebroadcaster of CFPS Port Elgin but in the future they would like to see the Tobermory outlet to become a stand alone radio station. CRTC decision was on July 23rd.

A little off topic, but speaking of raspy voices would be Nena Blackwood on SiriusXM one of the original VJ's from MTV.  Her breaks are hard to listen to with her raspy almost painful sounding voice. I usually flip the channel when she is speaking.

I do recall back in the 80's she had a rather husky voice, but she is almost unlistenable to me at least.  Actually I don't find any of the former VJ's that engaging on air, they all sound like they do next to no show prep.

I do like Pat St. John, he always has a good show and I appreciate his style.  Never really caught much of Cousin Brucie over the years unfortunately. Hope he enjoys retirement.

But the upside in this would be the fact that many people will now get much of NBC Peacock programming for free if they already receive Showcase and W, which millions do. Between the two channels they will be carrying all of the hot new programming will they not?  And as far as old NBC programming like Cheers and Frasier, they are already available anyway. So this arrangement also has it's benefits too!  Many people will like the fact that they don't need to subscribe to NBC Peacock to get most of this programming.

A show that some love and some don't like at all has done well in the nominations for this year's Emmy Awards. Fifteen nominations in total including for Best Comedy Series.
https://broadcastdialogue.com/schitts-creek-finale-season-earns-15-emmy-nominations/

Schitt's Creek was nominated for 4 Emmy's last year but came up empty handed.

Eugene Levy commented last year on the popularity of Schitt's Creek, which only occasionally makes the top 30 shows in Canada. On Pop TV in the US it is their most popular show.

Levy mentioned that SCTV was never a ratings winner either and was never in the top 30 shows.  SCTV really had more of a cult status when it originally aired in the late 70's into the mid 80's..   CBC ran the show in prime time and NBC ran a longer 90 minute version Fridays 12:30am until 2am.  At the time it seemed like everyone I knew watched SCTV and loved it, but in fact it never was a ratings winner.

Like Schitt's Creek, SCTV was nominated for many Emmy awards and did pick up some during it's run from 1976 to 1984.

You are right about many stations coiling up and getting boring, there are big advantages being an independent station and you are taking advantage of this.

I am all for free speech as long as it is accurate, factual,  not misleading and doesn't hurt or demean others. Your ideas on marketing and shaking things up are what stations did decades ago, and it still works.

All the best.   I am intrigued that you are hosting mid days on More FM 101.1 so you are also familiar and well versed on Canadian radio.  I have been listening to them for the past 40 minutes and they are a good station, never listened to them before.  I will be sure to check out your mid day show and  America's No #1 Oldies Station WECK!

Listening to O'Toole's answer, he is measured and most of the points he makes would be something that many would agree with.  I don't have a problem with CBC producing a program like Family Feud Canada since the private networks in Canada don't currently produce any game shows.  The fact that it is mainstream and on CBC doesn't matter to me, and probably doesn't to most people.  Using the old "is this any way to spend taxpayers money" is irrelevant.

BBC in the UK produces many mainstream shows, that compete directly with private networks as do other public broadcasters around the world. So why would the CBC not do this as well?  Especially when private networks here aren't producing even one game show?

And CBC TV low ratings?  Well, low ratings for over the air networks is not a problem exclusive to the crown corporation.  Shows having 1.5 to 3 million viewers in prime time on NBC, CBS, FOX, etc. is the equivalent of 150-300 thousand viewers in Canada.  CTV, City and Global are still getting decent numbers but they are the exception for over the air networks in North America.  And they have many built in advantages (sim sub, cherry picking the best US programming) to help them achieve this.

As far as CBC not airing the segment about themselves may have been as RA suggested for time. How long was the total interview?   Also the producer might have been accused of "making it about them" if the interview ended with the CBC segment.

Political parties tend to record all interviews in studio for themselves, as O'Toole's team did with this, so the producers at CBC would have known that this segment would likely be heard regardless of them airing it or not.  But for some it will still make CBC look like they are trying to hide this, or don't want to give O'Toole the platform, which is fair game too.

However this topic will not be going away anytime soon, and as I have mentioned before the CBC English TV service my evolve dramatically regardless

Billboard and the CHUM charts really were much different.  Looking at the top 5 for the week of July 20/68 on Billboard and CHUM's on July 22nd are not similar at all.  Overall there are a lot of big difference in the top 40 with the Billboard chart being a little more MOR oriented than CHUM.

Interesting to note that for some big songs CHUM was weeks ahead of Billboard.  Jumpin Jack Flash was number #1 on the CHUM chart five weeks prior on June 17 and 24th, it peaked at #3 on Billboard this week in 1968.  Herb Alpert This Guys in Love with You was #1 on the CHUM chart June 10th and by July 22nd was out of the top 40 but still showing up as #4 on Billboard.

Kiss 92.5 says "Toronto's #1 For Hit Music" and Virgin uses "Toronto's #1 Hit Music Station". To me at least Virgin's line is clearer that they are the most popular hit music station in Toronto, while the Kiss 92.5 slogan implies that they are Toronto's first choice or stop for hit music. If challenged it would be up to the stations to explain what they mean and prove their point.

And what exactly is hit music? Current hits or older hits from last year?  Who determines this?  Does Virgin and Kiss decide what is hit music by their playlist or chart?  If that is the case then it is easy for them to claim to be #1 for HIT MUSIC (our hit music).  Maybe CHUM beats them both, but CHUM likely doesn't really care because they "Make Toronto Pop!"

Neither Kiss or Virgin are claiming to be Toronto's Number #1 Radio Station like WECK is saying in Buffalo.  Isn't this the same station that a couple of years ago advertised that they were America's most popular Oldies Station?  Sounds like the owner is a bit of a character and publicity hound.  It doesn't sound like the other stations in town take WECK very seriously since they are no threat...
