Doing the midnight shift is so hard. There's a reason they used to give it to the younger up and coming on-air personalities. I started on overnights in my twenties and did them for two years before getting "promoted" to swing. Being that messed up sleep wise is it's own special kind of trip.

If it is Jim Richards doing the new night show, I wish him well. It's a tough enough gig when you're playing music and doing four breaks an hour, let alone talking non stop.

At the risk of sounding like a typical caller on an old Coast to Coast radio show could this "maintenance" be a review of the emergency operations.

What with the Texas weather and power catastrophe, and Canada's own past ice storms, are the "powers" that be getting prepared so that if the need arises, things are in place AND WORKING.

I've got my little black Sony am/fm battery operated radio ready to go. ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ“ป

Once upon a radio dial, there was a little show named Leafs Lunch that grew into TSN 1050's afternoon drive show and became "OverDrive".

Bryan Hayes, Noodles and "O" just celebrated their fifth anniversary on-air. Ratings have been respectable. The guys are 200 foot players when it comes to social media, and their fan base is large, loyal and vocal.

The competition, the Fan 590 afternoon show doesn't come close to matching the laid back friendly banter and beaking the three amigos get up to. To be honest, their's is the only live show I still listen to every single day without fail. The OverDrive podcast is easily available on Twitter, unlike other Bell radio show podcasts.

If you're looking for a change from covid centric content, and/or want smart sports conversation and interviews, with the friendly banter and beaking, the OverDrive guys are on from 4-7 Monday to Friday ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

TSN 1050's morning show, Leafs Lunch, and afternoon drive show are far superior to anything 590 has aired in the last couple of years, with the exception of Hockey Central.

Rogers Fanned on their shot at owning Toronto sports radio.

The Under The Influence episode this week is marketing during the pandemic. On the mother ship (CBC Radio 1) Thursdays and Saturdays at 11:30 am and podcast apps everywhere.

If you've never checked UTI out, DO yourself a favor and catch an episode, you'll see ads and the world a little differently, in a good way.

We're in that no man's land of some ads having people wearing masks, and some ads pretending like it's business as usual.

Can't wait to hear Terry O'Reilly's mix of marketing sense and pop culture sensibility....if that makes sense ๐Ÿ˜„

I believe Rush Limbaugh once said something along the lines of feminism was created by less attractive women so they could have a place in pop culture. Which sounds like an unfunny riff on a George Carlin bit.

Larry King, now Limbaugh. They used their voices, brains (as such re RL) and influential reach in very different ways.

He's a respected presence on Twitter, has multiple shows on the go, and a production studio and setup that has nimbly adapted to the challenge of working through covid.

This week, today in fact, Toronto Mike's podcast has reached episode 800 with TSN's Rod Black as his guest. Eight. Hundred. Considering it's a stand alone, independent podcast, as opposed to a podcast reroll of a daily radio show, that's a terrific milestone. Not sure how many other podcasts have racked up so many, except perhaps Humble and Fred's.

I've enjoyed more than a few Toronto Mike episodes myself, (the Stafford ones in particular) and thought it's an accomplishment worth noting here on the big yellow board.

Congratulations Mike.๐Ÿป We all know what brand of beer this would be in real life. ๐Ÿ˜๐ŸŽ™๏ธ๐ŸŽง

And the beauty of it is, you don't even need to do this every break or all the time.ย  Do the basics and do them well, do some show prep, and the other more challenging stuff will fall into place.ย

Excellent points you've got there paterson1. Right now there's a real opportunity for radio to reconnect with what is essentially a captive audience during the pandemic, and support them and the community by highlighting local businesses, and things to do in and around the home, and our neighborhoods instead of just repeating the same "stay at home" message and reciting covid case numbers. For example, BlogTO is doing a bang on job of bringing Toronto to Torontonians on Twitter.

We're all (according to the mental health experts) grieving the lives and relationships we had with friends, family and even casual acquaintances before the pandemic. Give listeners the grim news at the top and bottom of the hour, and then provide the best information about living through this.

I noticed 1010 was ginning up their recent newscast with the sound effect of emergency vehicle sirens when reporting on a shooting. Because that will definitely distract from the unattractive changes that have taken place at

Twitter is alive today, Saturday February 13, 2021 with radio folks talking about the stations they've worked for, the terrific people they've worked with, and their love for the still alive and viable medium.

I spent my twenties working on-air at both am pop and fm rock stations, and if it hadn't been for the crap pay, would have stayed in the game. I still miss doing my show, pulling off a great mix, interviewing musicians, interacting with listeners, learning from other radio pals, and all the other great things that came with a radio career.

Radio needs it's HBO "The Sopranos" moment, where someone grasps the essence of what radio is, the sound of the human voice, turns it on it's ear, and blows the corporations and consultants out of the water.

If you could change one thing in radio today, anything, the sky's the limit, what would it be?

That's an area more radio hosts could help their listeners out with, covid coping skills with entertainment, new shows, how you can maximize your library card to get a whack of movies and shows on DVD's, free online courses through Lydia, because I think the average listener is covided out.

Are you guys still listening to as much radio as you were six months ago? I'm not. Too much covid coverage.

On the plus side, if radio decides to treat listeners like grown-ups, copy writers would have a lot more leeway to play. And voice actors could really shine and entertain the audience with a "spot on" delivery. Straight reads are dull for everyone.

Wasn't there a spot a while back, for one of the smaller companies, that was chock full of puns, and clever puns at that. Not Northwood Mortgage, but ???

And that Big Ass Fans spot? As Nero Wolfe would say "Phooey!"

Rumor has it that Richards is being slated for some kind of late night/overnight network show across their multiple stations. If true, it's understandable he wouldn't want to anger his current employer.

Doing overnights is hard even when you're in your twenties, but I'm sure Jim would handle the schedule flip well, and his listeners would love to still be able to enjoy his humour and way of looking at the world.

He could even end up with a larger than average overnight audience with the pandemic and people keeping all sorts of quirky hours.

This was really satisfying to listen to RA, thanks for posting it. (I will say this tho, the stark flickering setup for the podcast, while cool looking could easily trigger a migraine within moments.)

I like what he had to say, and will be subscribing if he does launch a podcast. I didn't get the chance to hear him on CJAD, but always enjoyed him on 1010 when he filled in for vacationing hosts.

Two things Jon did on this podcast that I wish more on-air hosts and people who podcast would do. First, his cadence is natural and he actually takes a moment or two and pauses when speaking, giving the listener a bit of breathing space. It's so easy on the ears and brain. Second, he has almost no verbal crutches when he does pause. No constant ums or ahs. One could get used to that. I wish more broadcasters could manage it.

Here's to more Jon Pole content. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

I feel badly for the few remaining. Survivors guilt and having to go on-air like it's just another broadcast day.

Toronto Mike and Humble and Fred might be able to have a couple of the former radio personalities on their shows... not that any deep dark secrets would come out, it'd be more like talk therapy I guess, and they could let listeners know if they have any upcoming plans...

Voiceover work is always a strong possibility.

You also have to wonder if the continuing pandemic and Bell's #LetsWalk (pun intended) yearly purge changes the way radio employment contracts are written from the talents end, with certain length of payment guarantees nailed down up front by the bigger household names.

And will it affect the quality of people willing to work for Bell media. Probably not. I guess if you need to build your resume and get experience or understand what you're getting into, (and we've always known radio is not the most secure job)...a gig's a gig a gig.

I remember Mike Stafford commenting several times when doing the Stafford show about working for the other radio station up the dial, how perilous/short the stay could be and that he was glad he'd stayed put with 640 (I'm paraphrasing).
