The part with all of this, should Subway be successful, this will change things for the worse.    There will be worry to do any story against any company, with facts and evidence in hand.   The question should be if in fact the story was untruthful.   Sadly I have trouble listening to a Subway paid lab giving the truth.   A simple independent credible lab should be involved.  Should they come back with anything close to the CBC story, then Subway's case should be thrown out.   It just feels big money is pushing the courts around and not looking into the reality.

Reminds me of a time when Energy radio thought one voice one choice would work for hit music.

I don't think the "single voice" was the issue as the much as the lack of local due to how they happened to be doing it.  Most issues they had, was forgetting about the other 3 markets outside their Toronto focused one.   Music was a very close second, but that has more to do with the decisions being made.

Sending in VT's at least allows some attempt to being local..   Not as a good as in market hosts could do, but better than talking about stuff from out of market.

To be honest, when CHCH went to the classic tv/retro format during the day, I wondered how long it would be before they would have to say something.   The busy body types who complain to the CBSC over everything would for sure complain about some of the shows as they do have some outdated social and race based topics.    I have a feeling this it the only way to try and stop any current and future complaints by showing they are addressing the issue.

Myself, I feel the CBSC is getting abused by these people, and is mostly not doing what the original intent of the CBSC was.    I'm a long standing believer if you don't like the programming, you can turn it off.   Be it radio or tv, you have the control yourself to address issue... Why do we need the CBSC through a single complaint change everything to be watered down, bland, tripe?.

Even if it were mandatory in new receivers, digital-only AM won't ever get off the ground. And hybrid analog/digital AM seems to be not worth the trouble.

It's funny but the same arguments that long hit FM "will never work" really show their head on these conversations.

For AM, I tend to agree an hybrid option isn't going to work...     I do feel though should digital only MA3 format does show promise.   The main issue is compatible radios should be the only thing available to buy.  Once the radios are in place at a number worth taking the risk, it then will be possible to move to an all digital format.

MA3 format stays within frequency, unlike hybrid.   It also will drop to a lower bandwidth if the signal becomes weak vs flipping back and forth analog to digital.     The nighttime and regular interference does not affect MA3 format like hybrid as well.   Most stations that dropped hybrid format, did so due to the limitations of hybrid. MA3 all digital, does not experience the same issues.

I think sadly MA3 is the only way AM will work for the future, and should have been started as an effort to move there 5 years ago.   Programming will also need to adjust as well in same cases.    We may not see 2-3 sports stations and 4 talk stations in a market, but instead more music formats...

But until the radios are there... it can't happen.

OTA is a severe dinosaur. If you use IPTV to watch instead, Bell gets none of the money, unless you are using Bell internet. lol

I would argue, that OTA has had a resurgence with cord cutting and digital.   I would say until the end of analog, perhaps it was heading for end of life, but the "dinosaur" is really seen a rebirth.   Sadly with the same people owning cable as over the air stations, there is for sure "less effort" being put towards OTA as it would be if the local station was owned by just a broadcaster.     Sadly with cable cutters, this is a poor move on their part, because no one who has cut their cable, is coming back because they can't get CTV.     As well, most of these IPTV services are not licensed and illegal.   They will only work until they get shut down.

Probably because it's too close to CHRE/St Catharines. Significant overlap in coverage. A couple other Bell AC/Hot ACs didn't change either.

I think K-Lite will stick around.. it does too well in the market.

Klite does very well in Hamilton, but I don't think Bell cares if they can save money using a national brand.   QMfm is a huge station in Vancouver for example and still flipped. Heritage and ratings mean zero to them if they can pool and save money. For years 1029 and 1057 have been the same station with slightly different music mixes and some different hosts, yet people always went for one over the other...  I bet should Move work, you may see others like klite join the network, like Pure Country and Virgin.   Perhaps they didn't want to blow up everything at once, until they see. Again.. only guessing here.

To start this off.. I'm no fan of the CBSC and the people who abuse the point of it.    The fact the "complaint" was over a story on streaming services in Canada?   Clearly someone who has invested interest in Canadian content being forced on people, because the general public to be honest is not going to disagree with David's opinions.  Majority will agree.   On a story like that I really don't mind some common sense opinion in the lead up to the story itself as he was not the one one doing the report.  Only in Canada would a single complaint like this go anywhere.    This is not the intention of what the CBSC is for. Sadly instead of listeners simply turning the radio off, busy body types make them into huge issues, like this.

As for the example "He was looking forward to his 7th birthday party... now, thanks to a random drive-by shooting, he'll never enjoy his first kiss, or graduation, or growing old with his grandchildren", although a bit dramatic, I also don't find it as some editorial/attempt at humour.   It for sure hits emotion and a bit dramatic, but no worse than anything THE BIG 8's 20/20 news would have done years ago.

I'm reminded here of people needing to learn there is an off button...   If you don't like what comes out of the speakers, or the screen, then turn it off!   It's that simple.    The intent of the CBSC is to ensure facts are reported as facts, advertisers claims are justified, and content hits a basic level of decency when children could be listening/watching.   Nothing here in my view qualifies as a reasonable complaint worthy of the CBSC being involved.

It's time we all act like adults here... and stop asking for big brother to stop someone because you disagree with them, especially when you yourself have the control of the ability to listen/watch.

There is 2 ways they can do this...

For the sake of appearance independence they could use the same transmitter and assign digital channel number to one station, and another channel for another.   Technically it's the same frequency channel, but appears on each persons TV as a different channel number.

True subchannels tend to give you 2-1, 2-2 and so on.   Typically this is done if they relate, to the main channel or if they are keeping it under the same call letters, like most US subchannels with satellite programming.   They don't require unique licenses to do this, in the US.

Technically the same thing between the two, but I have a feeling they won't want to merge licenses and want to keep the independence between the two, should something happen to one over the other.   I'm mostly shocked CTV and CTV2 haven't done in areas they overlap.   (Barrie/Toronto for example) or CBC and ICI. Even Omni 1 and 2.  You can get 2 good quality HD signals on one transmitter, or multi SD full screen stations.

This problem is not specific to 640 but rather the Roy Greene Show.  I have noticed for almost a year now that Roy often has an annoying echo whenever he has guests or callers on the phone.

The first time I thought ok, maybe they are training a new person and somebody will correct the mistake.  But no, this has been going on for months. Why has this technical glitch not been corrected?  It sounds like garbage, especially when he has two or three pundits on with him, all on separate phone lines.

Often the cell phone quality is very muffled and hard to listen to.  When arranging guests, Roy or his producer should see if the guest could possibly be on a land line rather than cell.  But do something about the echo, which I have never heard on any other talk show.  That is not the way to make a program stand out!

After hearing this a few times...I think the echo is due to Roy having his headset turned too high near the mic, a poor headset that doesn't block sound coming out the sides, or doesn't leave the headset on, but cranks it up.

Roy I think does the show remotely, which has slight digital delay.   Because the studio (CHML) sends back callers to him to hear and not his own voice, I think the bleed is his headset to his microphone.

He either has to change his headset to a better one that stops sound bleeding out, OR turn the headset down.     I don't hear this on other hosts who work remotely so it's an isolated case to Roy.

Time will tell.

Due to local content rules, I can't see them cutting CityNews again after cutting BT in the same markets. BT was the only thing at one point of keeping them in compliance.  Changes would need to happen at the CRTC level for this to happen or they would have to make up the local hours by adding other local programming.

The ultimate question is, are there any issues with the age of the listener.
Sometimes a CHR flips to something else because they believe their main audience to be "too young".

It happened in London Ontario back in the day with Energy radio.

Short term thinking really.   Today's CHR listener is much older, and it's presented differently than years past.   Same goes for HOT AC.    The CHR listener tends to be 18 to 40 female, where HOT AC tends to hit the 25 to 54 female.  Loads of cross over between the 2 and can technically be branded the same as both play all hits, one just plays more recurrents, and less repetition, which could be the logic to keep them listening longer to push that share point up.

My 2 cents..

Private broadcasters and streaming sites like netflix/spotify etc SHOULD have to pay into a fund and SHOULD have to offer some Canadian productions outside news..  but saying they need to air them during set times of day, and X amount I disagree with.

That all being said, I think CBC TV outside of news, should be 100% Canadian.   They should be the home for Canadian productions.   This to me is what a public broadcaster should be offering, not trying to be a commercial competitor.

Same goes for Radio...   I think CBC should be 100% Canadian on radio.   Own being the home for Canadian.   Private broadcasters should have to fund Canadian, but make their own playlists according to the marketplace demands.   Offer incentives for stations who play Canadian perhaps.

This is not 1970... It's 2020.    The Internet generation does not want to be TOLD what to listen to or watch..   They can make up their own minds.    It's time the Government and the CRTC woke up and realized this.   It's time to modernize the system, and stop worrying about what worked when mp3s, iphones and the internet did not exist.   This is not FREEDOM... this approach is dare I say communist.   I would love a constitutional challenge to be made against the government and CRTC on this issue...  I have a feeling some of these laws would be thrown out. *but I'm no lawyer.

Honestly...   I think the approach of forced percentages, and forced listening/watching of Canadian is so out of touch with the needs and wants of Canadians.   This is a voting issue for me and I will vote against the liberals on this issue.  I hope companies decide to fight back and not just take it.      I don't have an issue making the content available and putting money into a fund to support it, but this forced play/view approach needs to stop on current media, and not start on digital media.   I should have the right of what I want to watch, and listen to and not be told by the government.

Sports typically targets 18 to 54 Male..   I don't think the under 50 crowd is wanting any music on their sports station, not to mention wants their sports station to play blocks of music.    If this was to happen, I think Fan would win more than they already do.

Roger's show is on Orybit Media, which is Bell's syndicated arm.   I'm sure they are doing just fine giving it to stations that sign the agreement to air it, including Jewel 88.5

I wouldn't count on it.

There hasn't been a single example of an HD station getting any ratings anywhere, and many south of the border have legitimately tried. The technology just isn't ubiquitous (irony!) enough to play well with the low sample rates of ratings systems.

They could maybe sell the whole thing to a single client, or maybe they see it as a flanker, but beyond that there's not much point.

I tend to agree.  I think we are far away from HD having hosts unless they are shared from other properties via voice tracking, which I think could be done with little added cost.    Wave.fm is a great example of how it can be done.

Now... they need to promote it if they hope to get numbers on it.  Good for them doing something unique on HD vs just putting something already available in the marketplace.   People will only care if it's content people want, they know it's there via promotion, and it's something different than is already available in the marketplace on their current radio lineup.

Will they be commercial free forever?  NO!   but if they do it right, they can likely justify selling it!   2 to 4 profit streams off one transmitter is very appealing if it works, but it will only work if people know it's there and not hoping people just land on it.

The show on 1010, is sent down the Bell Network to all news talk stations in the chain to air in Ontario.    It's clearly identified as a paid program BUT these are one of the few programs I tend to appreciate because of how bad employers have become.    Not all are, but there is loads, and education is beneficial.    The real calls are real issues typically, and it's shocking when you hear how crooked some places are.   I also think it's educational to employers, as a few have called in as well.    Yes.. it's to push people to the office of the lawyer, but the law is the same for every employment firm, so I find it less pushy vs product a and product b commercial shows.

Are they huge ratings wins?  likely not... but based on the long flow of calls, I think they are very popular vs a normal infomercial. I think they are a great win financially.

As well 640 and 1010 running the shows for different lawyers at the same time, is smart programming.   It pushes people to decide which one to listen to.  Corus also sends their show out on the Corus network in Ontario, as 900 in Hamilton and I think 980 in London runs it as well.

I don't trust lawyers fully, but I have used one and can appreciate when you need one..
