Fuck I hate writing these things, especially when the subject line tells the whole story before you even click on it.

Terry posted the sad news on Mike's Facebook page about an hour ago.

In many ways Mike's 'sound' was the Chum news sound.  You can still hear it in some of the newscasters he worked with or influenced today.

465 downloads of that manual last week alone?  Incredible demand.  You did the right thing running away from that site .

Anyway, Here's an interesting review on the radio, doesn't offer much more.  The author did scan the manual in, but it's a 404 link now.

I've also been a customer of Tommy's many times.  I agree, his schtick doesn't go over well here from time to time, but he truly does have a heart of gold.  I can think of quite a few times over the years that a tech. producer has gone down there with next to nothing to spend for a wedding, funeral, job interview or whatever and Tom made sure they were well taken care of.

He's a wonderfully kind and generous guy.

Despite all the bombast you hear on the radio, they have staff who really know their stuff.  The first time I walked in there looking for a suit, the gentleman serving me looked me up and down, reached into a rack and pulled out exactly what I was after.

I know the ads can be a turn-off, but they did their job.  They got my attention and got me to investigate them further only to discover it is actually a pretty decent shop.

That doesn't mean I like the ads.  But hey, a guy's gotta make a living, right?  It obviously works for them.

It's not that simple.

CC could certainly have made the local KFI shows available... but...  big but... (butt?)  A lot of commercials, promos, bumpers involve union talent, and that talent is only paid for a specific geographical area.  So it's not as simple as just geo-blocking 'some' parts of the show, you pretty much need to re-create the broadcast and edit, switch out etc. on the fly.  This also includes drops, news segments, guests etc.

I've had Canadian show guests ask me if I can ensure their interview isn't broadcast in the states, and I laugh and when I tell them It's easier to find someone else, 10 times out of 10 they agree it's not a huge deal.  But it doesn't mean they don't try.

With all the copyright shite nowadays nothing is simple.

I agree, it's easier to subscribe to a vpn for $4 a month and not worry about it.

RadioActive wrote:

I haven't listened to WBEN in ages, with the exception of Sandy Beach's 50th anniversary show a few months ago. But this kind of thing really drives me crazy. (And as I always say, it's not a very long drive!)

I sort of get the semi-coherent rationale that over-the-air music stations have to geoblock (sorry Geo!) their signals into Canada over rights agreements. Although I think that's pretty specious logic.

But locally produced talk shows which don't involve any copyrights? That's just insane. If they wanted to cut off Rush Limbaugh, OK, it's syndicated and he has his own deal. But Sandy Beach's or Tom Bauerle's efforts? The reasons simply confound me.

It was the same thing when Bill Carroll was on KFI in L.A. What, exactly, was the reason to not allow the world to hear his show if someone out of the country was interested? It was a locally originated show. Where are the rights issues?

Talk about taking the "world" out of the worldwide web...

(or Cornwall for that matter) Big in HD may be incentive enough for them, I'm sure with Queens they could come up with some creative uses for the sub channels, and at the absolute minimum, with 2 FM's in that market, it would be great CRTC hearing at-a-boy stuff for them.

Interesting idea. Fresh Hamilton would be a no-brainer; they could turn that on tomorrow. Big in Kingston is another matter -- who would pay for that? There's no incentive for Corus to otherwise turn on HD on that signal.

Someday the CKAV story will make for a great book, but it is unfortunately politically charged as hell, and it's not my story to tell.

When it was obvious that the CKAV stations were hopelessly lost, and probably about to lose their licences, a group of Broadcasters got together and offered, on a volunteer basis to help out as much as we could.  Offering production, scheduling, management, sales and any and all other advice and execution we could.  Unfortunately our 'life support' efforts were too little, too late.  The restaurant had sold far too many bad meals and made too many broken promises to remain in business.

I believe, had CKAV been able to fund the legal representation for their appeal they would have won at least a short reprieve and chance for the 'fixed' aspects of the COL to be recognized.  We were well on the way, meeting COL in most areas with the exception of local studios which was a budgetary impossibility at that stage.  The CRTC were wrong basing the performance of an entire network of stations on audio tapes from 6-9 months before a recovery mission had started, from one market, and had little to no proof of many of the accusations that Jean-Pierre Blais felt comfortable making.  But again.. water under the bridge, and to be honest the debts that had been incurred over the months and years were insurmountable by that stage of the story.

Having said that, during the existence of CKAV and till we offered to help get things at least somewhere close to back on track, there was breathtaking financial abuse on the part of upper management, but also on the part of CBC and others who rented tower space to AVR at ludicrous rates.  I don't know who initially negotiated the AVR contracts but they were absolutely taken for a ride.   To be honest, and of course hindsight is 20/20, anyone looking back can see the original model was critically flawed from the start.  There's just no way they could ever have generated enough in sales to cove

As a supporter of MMC for decades before there was MMC I think this is a great way to go. I'm amazed it hasn't expanded to radio far quicker than it has.

I've built and worked in tv network masters covering easily 20-30 channels across the country and sure there are glitches, but there are more glitches locally.

Is it more work for fewer people? yes. But that's the world today and it's not changing back. I'd rather have a good major market team creating small market content than no content at all..

with live cameras and everything else on the internet that's available, if you can't create a minor market newscast from anywhere in the world, there's a problem and it's not with the technology.

So...no news is good news, right?

I believe that it is.

With minute by minute PPM results, I'd bet the second news starts they see a dip, in a format like that, no matter how you present it, it's a distraction.  If you want news, the listeners know where to go for it.  I think it's a great idea.  If I want to clear my teens out of the living room and get the TV to myself, all I need to do is turn on any news channel for more than 3 minutes, I get the groan, and off they go somewhere else.

There used to be an idea that listeners 'needed' to be exposed to news, but that was a long long time ago.

Also, fighting in an 'on demand' world, the listener can get news on their schedule, not at the top and bottom of the hour or whatever.  They may very well have just sat through a newscast before they left the house.

The BBC is to give up competing with commercial radio stations for audiences to focus on the threat to its future from music on Spotify and podcasts via Apple.

James Purnell, the BBC’s director of radio, will signal the shift this week by declaring he does not “care” about audience share or beating commercial stations in the battle for listeners.

In a speech seen by The Sunday Telegraph, Mr Purnell will say that the BBC need to change quickly and shift spending away from its traditional broadcast programming to serve younger and more diverse audiences better.

“We need to change faster than we have in the last few years,” the former Labour cabinet minister will say. “We’ll need to change where we allocate our money. We’ll need to change the kind of content we offer. “

BBC radio has been losing ground to commercial broadcasters such as Global, company behind the phone-in station LBC which uses high-profile politicians such as as Nigel Farage and Sadiq Khan as presenters.

The major flaw is this is one of the few cases where it should have been an AM station with a large footprint.

Within months you’ll be hearing complaints about the FM coverage area, or lack of, and how a power increase is required to even consider making this s going concern.

That AM coverage is what is required to make this concept a success.

[Via Globe)

Shaw Communications Inc. is attempting to sell its stake in broadcaster Corus Entertainment Inc. as part of a strategy to build a war chest for expansion of its Freedom Mobile wireless network.

Shaw recently hired investment bank TD Securities Inc. to find a buyer for its 38-per-cent stake in television and radio station owner Corus, according to sources familiar with the Shaw’s plans. These sources say Shaw is shopping its Corus stake, currently worth approximately $540-million, to a list of dozens of potential buyers, with a focus on private equity funds and other deep-pocketed investors that don’t currently own a national media business in Canada.

Toronto-based Corus owns a stable of 44 specialty television channels, including the Food Network and HGTV, and 15 conventional TV stations, including the national Global TV network, along with 39 radio stations. Sources say Shaw and Corus would listen to offers for individual business lines and that Shaw would also be content to continue as a major shareholder in Corus if no buyers emerge.

Spokespeople for Shaw, Corus and TD declined to comment.

Shaw is attempting to sell Corus at a time when the broadcaster’s revenue is falling, partly because of shrinking audiences and advertising for conventional TV. Corus is expected to cut its $1.14 annual common share dividend when the company reports financial results later this month. The dividend currently sends $90-million annually to Shaw Communications.

For fuck sake, It's a job, the integrity or lack thereof, imho could also easily be attributed to anyone who works for McGuinty, Wynne, or any politician anywhere on the planet.   Same thing for people who work for certain radio companies that I wouldn't trust nor want to be associated with.  They have bills to pay, and very possibly don't share my opinion of the company or person.

As usual, I love how people hiding behind their fucking pseudonyms are so quick to bravely call out real people.  It's so simple sitting in your underwear in front of the computer monitor to call out people that you assume will never react.

It's one of the reasons, on the few occasions it's happened, I've gladly given boardhost my go ahead (not that they'd need it with a subpoena) to release IP information of posters to the appropriate authorities, when lawyers start poking and prodding around here.  I'm certainly not going to invest 1c of my money in protecting the 'identity' of some clown who feels he/she answers to nobody.  Reality is, you do.

Having said that, if I do try to respond to you via e-mail, and discover it's a 'disposable' e-mail address, consider your account nuked.  Either update it with real contact information, or go away.  Simple choices.

Closing this thread because it's sliding into stupid name calling and the usual political bullshit that I honestly don't have time or interest in.

For today, it's just the thread that's being closed, but I'm very close to walking from the entire thing.  The majority of posters are so predictable I could write their stuff for them, and their multiple personalities.

Board footera
