I remember CHUM showing Wings' Give Ireland Back To The Irish as their Hitbound pick on the CHUM Chart and playing it for a couple of weeks, but then it was abruptly dropped. I was surprised by this because their Hitbound songs normally made the chart, and on top of that this was McCartney's first single with Wings. But my mother told me at the time that she figured they had stopped playing it because it was too controversial, and she was right ... I just found the following confirmation of this from Billboard.
CHUM in Toronto dropped the Wings' single, "Give Ireland Back to the Irish" after "substantial negative response from listeners."

I do remember CHUM playing all three songs. However, Where Did Our Love Go and Daisy Mae only spent 5 weeks on the CHUM chart, peaking at #18 and #13 respectively, and I think that this meant that they didn't get any airplay after their brief chart runs. Hey Big Brother was a more significant hit, spending 8 weeks on the chart and peaking at #8 ... that was enough to get it onto the year-end top 100, but only at #100, and so I doubt it got played much after its chart run either. I don't think it helped with any of them that they fell well short of making the top 10 on Billboard ... with the exception of Cancon, I noticed over the years that songs that were big hits here but not on Billboard tended to not get the same airplay after their chart runs ended as songs that had also been big Billboard hits.

Agreed, Fitz ... that was what I had done, and then I posted the link that resulted. But that link must just be temporary. The link I got for his profile was http://sowny.net/profile.php?id=84, and then I clicked on "Show all posts" ... I'm just posting the profile link in case it works and helps make things easier.

If it was their official twitter handle it's gone now.  Someone thought it was or found it briefly because they tweeted at them.  In any case @sauga960 doesn't exist at the moment.

It WAS there about a half hour ago. I saw it - there were no tweets at all and somehow they had 9 followers! (Probably station personnel.)

It does seem that they changed it. Here's the new handle.

And then there's this one ... I remember the original version getting played and it did sound like it contained the f-word, but I figured it had to be something else. Eventually it got replaced with a version with that part edited out.

Yes, i would agree with the above comments, particularly about the credibility of the CHUM Chart during those years. But re Christopher Cross, I do remember CHUM playing his 1983 hit All Right, which went to #5. This was after they returned to more mainstream Top 40 music. They also charted Say You'll Be Mine in 1981 ... I don't remember it that well, but they may have also played it.

I didn't hear what she said, so I don't know if the following would be a consideration. But for what it's worth, Oshawa is part of the Greater Toronto Area, although it's not part of the Toronto Census Metropolitan Area. Here's a map showing the two:
https://www.toronto.ca/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/90c1-EDC-Map-GTA-CMA.png
The first is based on political boundaries, whereas the second is based on how Statistics Canada analyzes data. Reminds me of how back when I worked in the transit industry, I saw Mississauga Transit's city shown as being Toronto in various tables in a major publication. I told my boss about this, and she said that this was appropriate because it was part of the Toronto CMA. I could see the logic, but I still wouldn't have done it that way.

It appears there's a chance our old friend Jack may no longer be doing his show at GNR 640 on Sundays.

He hasn't been on the past two weeks (which could have been vacation time) and his ads appear to no longer be running there, either. But a check of the Corus Sunday schedule on its web page shows the 5 PM slot is now occupied by "The Oakley Show Weekend."

So unless the page has not been updated in some time, his show is no longer listed as being on the station.

Here's the latest info that they have on their website about what's happening with his show.

I wondered about that as well. I don't know how much that this is done, but I'm a Consumer Reports subscriber and that's what they do. When I want to pass along an article to someone I just scan it instead, but it does bother me that they don't provide online access to subscribers. It would be interesting to know how many print subscribers are willing to pay for online access as well ... my guess would be that it's very few.

I thought of that as  well, and saw that CINT is also on the list. But given how long it's been since they originally applied for the licence , I'm wondering if either of them were available back then ... if not, perhaps that would help to explain their choice.

Couldn't agree more. I think it was RA that first raised this issue here some time ago, but I'm sure I would have thought of it on my own. Every time I see this thread move up to the top of the index because of a new post here, I think of how problematic they are ... in other words, I'm not getting used to them. I'm guessing they'll mostly use something like Newstalk 960 on air so it won't be that much of an issue, but it's still really strange that they chose those letters.

Really interesting trip down memory lane, RA. Thanks very much for posting this. I remember all the format changes they went through, going back to the early 70s. I first discovered CKFH as a child because of them being the Leafs' broadcaster, but then found that I liked them better than CHUM -- that is, until they went country. I still remember the morning I woke up to that, and my disappointment at losing my favourite station ... although I realized even back then that they just weren't getting good enough ratings with what they were doing. I did like their attempts to mix music, talk, and sports, but I could also understand why it ultimately made more sense for them to go all-sports.

In addition, I think this ties in well with another post you made elsewhere recently. All those things that they tried back then were a lot more interesting to me than the way radio tends to be now. And I understand that this is just a natural evolution of the business, but as you said, with a lot of stations there just isn't as much to discuss now that is all that meaningful to many people like myself.

Very much agree with everything you said, RA. And like you, I miss the many good radio people who used to post here. I used to assist in moderating another site, and I know how challenging it can be. I agree with what you're saying about giving people a few chances, but then removing them if they keep causing problems. It's probably a good thing that I don't post as much here in the way that I used to.

In looking up when The Joker was a hit, I found that the Steve Miller Band actually first charted in 1968 with Living In The USA. It was from their next album and it only got to #94, but I thought that might be of interest.

You're right. I was thinking more of the "Fly Like An Eagle" years, but "The Joker" did hit earlier.  Now if we could just figure out what the Pompatus of Love was. (Actually, it's fairly well explained here.

If the forum allowed it, I was actually thinking that I would have changed my name to the Pompatus of Love for that post.

If memory serves (and these days it so often doesn't!) the board came back the same day that Phil's version disappeared.

Here's what someone here had to say about the second coming of Iain Grant at the time ... seems that he knew what (and whom) he was talking about.
