SOWNY » Sandy Beach Replacement » July 23, 2020 10:26 am

Wow. David Bellavia certainly had no shortage of offers and opportunities in all kinds of fields following his receiving the Medal of Honor. There was a movement to draft him to run for congress (again) in NY 27 after the guy who defeated him in the primary resigned on being convicted of insider trading.

He has said on the air that he was not comfortable using the Medal of Honor as a springboard of sorts for running for office. I expect that a few years as a prominent radio host might go a long way to giving him broader credibility in the community and a clearer conscience about running again.

Anyway, spare a thought for a real entertainer. They really don't make them like that anymore.

I ran into the instantly-recognisable Shack, in his trademark cowboy hat, last summer at the St. Lawrence Market. I greeted him with a hearty "Clear the Track!" I reckon he gets that a lot but he smiled and acknowledged me with that big grin. He really was motoring through the crowd, clearing the track was an appropriate call.

He is a legend. We lost Red Kelly last year. There are not many left with Maple Leafs Stanley Cups rings. Although someone told me Eddie had confided in them that he had sold his cause he needed the money.

I find it amusing that there is a cottage timeshare ad running the past few weeks on CFRB. I am not sure how long ago the last time I heard the get-out-of-your-timeshare ad on the same station but I seem to recall it running for quite a while and that they had Jim Richards doing the shilling. This one is an outside voice. It would be funny to have them running simultaneously.

Currently no stations in Canada carry Rush Limbaugh's radio program and I don't believe any or very few actually ever have.  So his influence on Canadian radio, AM or otherwise is zero.

Incorrect.

He saved the format, and the format crosses the border.

But here you are, making this thread political, despite some desperate pleas from the denizens of the Big Yellow Board to stick to the topic. I posted an observation about Rush's skills and effect as a radio man, let's discuss that. Or let's let the thread die.

Sort of interesting this post has had so many comments and views. I bet 98% of the members here have never listened to one full Rush Limbaugh program, and many have only seen clips of his show on Youtube or on the news.

I listen to Rush often. He is very good at what he does. This is by no means an invitation for a response itemizing others hatred for the man. I know, we know how you feel. Save it.

His show is different than most nationally-syndicated shows, in that he does very few guests. It is mostly his monologues, and callers. It takes a particular skill to do that, which he possesses. He is very good with callers at teasing out the inner question in their questions. People often call with a good thought, but have trouble expressing it, and he often decants their rambling into a an articulate and interesting question, and then answers it. His insight is powerful.

His critics, who do not listen of course, are not aware of his skills. They too are good at painting him with the typical traits they have associated with the deplorables, but it is mostly manufactured outrage, the man is none of those things.

Politics aside, the radio industry - employer of a great number of the people on this board - owes Rush a huge debt of gratitude. More than anyone else, he has kept AM radio alive long past when many thought it would have pegged out. Think about that before the next time you cash your cheque.

All of them are lacking with commentators from the conservative side of the spectrum.  I do give CBC points however for using Stockwell Day on CBC News Network.  He was an unlikely choice but in fact he is a good commentator.  On the other side Tom Mulcair has been excellent for CTV in my opinion. And it also shows how the NDP blew it bouncing him as leader of the party.

From what I heard, the Conservative Party blew it not recruiting Mulcair as a candidate when they had a chance before he joined the NDP.

SOWNY » David Bellavia on WBEN 12pm-3pm during Corona crisis » April 10, 2020 4:25 pm

WBEN has been pre-empting their syndicated Rush Limbaugh feed in the 12-3 slot for the past couple of weeks, in favour of a pattern of daily pressers with Governor Cuomo followed by / enveloped by talk and call-in hosted by David Bellavia.

I have to say the Cuomo-casts are as tedious as any other dailies I have been hearing (Ford, Trudeau, Trump, Tory, et al), but I have enjoyed hearing Bellavia on air again, and have tuned in many days when I can (my wife cannot stand the hiss on the distant WBEN signal here in Toronto, so I can only do so ensconced in my home office, and WBEN is geo-locked in Canada - I need to get this VPN thing happening one of these days)

David was always the saner one when he was co-billed with Tom Bauerle, and now that they are running back-to-back instead of side-by-side, the evidence is ever more clear.

I am a radio junkie. I probably log 8-10 hours a day most days. Mostly CFRB, CBC, WNED and AM640.

I reached a breaking point with the Covid coverage though and have taken the past two days off.

There is literally no other story, every show, every hit, every guest, every caller, everything is about Covid-19. We have never seen anything completely consume the conversation like this.

We live in interesting times. Unfortunately.

All the talent doing their shows from home on CFRB have sounded pretty good, considering so many odd remote locations.

But I believe it's Tiffany Hensby who has also been doing her newscasts for the station from her residence and boy, can you tell. The sound is hollow and has echoes, likely because of the room where they set up her equipment. It's very noticeable and I'm actually amazed that so far, it's the only one where you can really tell she's not on site. Not sure if they can fix it but it definitely doesn't sound like a radio studio, whereas the others mostly do.

I noticed that as well. She sounds a bit echoey. Still quite clear however.

One glitch I heard was Becky Coles dropped off mid-convo with Jerry Agar this morning. They joked that her cat had stepped on the connection.

CFRB is really hyping an hour-long one-on-one with Kathleen Wynne and Jerry Agar this Friday at 9:00am.

They are running teasers for it as of this morning, and both John Moore and Jerry have mentioned it several times.

Wynne was also ubiquitous this weekend at the Ontario Liberal party convention held to choose her successor as leader. It is an intriguing strategy for the party to have her so front and centre as they attempt to turn the page from their worst result ever. Methinks they may decide down the road to find a quieter place in the shade for her.
