Re: Daughter of Detroit/Windsor legend follows in his radio footsteps

In the early eighties, I lived in southwestern Ontario and remember hearing Dick Purtan do the morning drive show on CKLW.  He was still a big name in Detroit radio and it was considered a coup for the Big 8 to acquire his services.  Ratings did increase on morning drive, but ultimately, it did not save the top 40 format and the station switched to news/talk withing a few years.

Sadly, Dick and his family lost their wife and mother on Halloween.

Gail Purtan, philanthropist and wife of radio's Dick Purtan, dies at 80

To keep this thread 'SOWNY' specific, didn't Purtan start his career as 'Guy King' on WWOL Buffalo in the late '50s?

Yes, apparently he was one of several DJs, including Tom Clay, who used the name Guy King at WWOL in the late fifties/early sixties.
