North Bay's CFCH-FM 90.5 has officially launched as Country 90.5 - "North Bay's Best Country" on June 15, 2021 by Vista Radio. This brings back the heritage CFCH call sign to North Bay and is also the first time North Bay had a country music radio station on FM since the 1990's. Interestingly, Rogers Media already owns a radio station AM 600 CKAT which has the similar branding "Country 600". https://www.country600.com/  I wonder what the future will be for AM 600 which is one of northern Ontario's last high-powered AM radio stations? 🤔 I wish the new Country 90.5 all the best of luck and success on their new radio station for many, many years to come! 🤠👍

I've always wonder if 800 CJBQ has any future plans of adding a nested FM transmitter or move to FM altogether? Belleville is one of the last cities between Ottawa and Toronto to have an AM radio station.

The CRTC approved the CBC's application to change CBO-FM-1's frequency in Belleville from 104.7 MHz to 90.3 MHz. This will definitely resolve the ongoing interference issues with WBBS 104.7 near Syracuse, New York.

A lot of the analog television stations had shutdown with only a few left still running in 2021 here and there in Canada. I think that once all the television stations are shutdown between channels 2 and 6 we shall see what the future will be for that section. There are some old multi-band radios even portable CD players that actually have a TV sound band that cover the 54-88 MHz range so it wouldn't be a bad idea to expand the FM band below 88 MHz rather than above 107.9 MHz where the aviation band is.

There used to be a radio station on AM 530 kHz in High Level, Alberta from 1988 until it moved to FM in 1999.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/CKHL-FM

A few other 530's in Canada but they were low-power:

CIRS 530 Sault. Ste. Marie, ON Traveler's Info
CKML 530 Deep River, ON Emergency Info - https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/CKML
I can't think of anymore AM 530's in Canada but these low-power stations have since left the air.

I found out from the mediumwave.info website just a few days ago that there's some AM radio stations in Brazil that are migrating to the FM band but below 88 MHz in the 77 and 84 MHz range!
https://mediumwave.info/2021/05/07/brazil-2/

I do like the idea of expanding the FM below 88 MHz. If they can do it in Brazil then why not here in North America and the rest of the world? Would definitely be ideal for large cities like Toronto with such a jammed pack FM band!

Amherst Island Radio Broadcasting Inc. CJAI-FM which is currently operates at 92.1 FM in Stella near Kingston, Ontario received approval by the CRTC to move from 92.1 FM to 101.3 FM with significant power increase from 250 watts to 4,800 watts! 🙂 This would serve the entire Amherst Island,  Kingston, parts of Prince Edward County and surrounding areas but I wonder if it will be strong enough to block out WRMM 101.3 Rochester, NY across the lake? They plan to be  on 101.3 FM in 4-6 months. Hope it all works out well for the radio station and I wish them the best of luck!

I can't seem to find anymore info anywhere else online but I would be interested to know what episodes will be aired during the summer 2021 reruns. I'm guessing but I can't be 100% sure that it may be Ken Jennings' guest host shows from January or possibly the last few weeks of Alex Trebek's episodes to his final episode which was aired January 8, 2021 taped prior to his death in November 2020. Would be ideal if they can rerun Trebek's final weeks on Jeopardy! with his final episode aired before the start of the 38th season with a new host.

I've been watching Dr. Oz's guest host episodes this week and he seems alright but may not be fit for a permanent Jeopardy! host. As for Netflix carrying Jeopardy! episodes from from 2017 which wasn't too long ago, too bad they (Netflix) doesn't have any Jeopardy! episodes from the start in 1984, including pilot episodes and the Art Fleming era which would be awesome to have! I found a few J! Alex Trebek full episodes online from the start on YouTube and other sites, unfortunately some of the Fleming episodes may be permanently gone.

What may save Chris is the fact he's not reporting for CNN.  He does a opinion based news show, not a newscast.   I laugh every time I see "journalists" get all upset about these shows, but facts are Chris and Don's shows in the evening are very opinion driven news talk shows... not in anyway a newscast or reporting.   Anderson walks a fine line, because he still does a bit of reporting...     I'm not defending the shows and programming decisions of CNN, but had Chris been a reporter or anchor of a newscast, yes... I would likely expect them to pull him off the air.    On a opinion based talk show?   Doubtful.   Chris made the smart decision to avoid this topic on his show since these issue broke.    Journalists get very upset about this type of thing, but once a journalist walks over to opinion talk shows, I think it's hard to say that some how his credibility is tarnished... because it already was the moment he started that format of show.

I sure miss those days when Larry King did his own "Live" shows weeknights! RIP Larry!

I have a couple of old Public Service Announcement (PSA's) videos of Sports and Fitness Ontario from the Ministry of Tourism and Recreation from the 1980's, that I found after going through some old VHS video tapes and thought I'd like to share these! 😀 I'm just curious to know if anyone knew who these people were in the videos, who was the person that sang this song and where were they recorded? I'm unsure of how many television stations and networks aired these PSA's in Ontario but I can't seem to find any information on these videos anywhere else online that I'm sharing!

Here are these YouTube links! The dates of these videos may not be exact as they were from around those times.

I've always known that channel 1 was never used for most of my life but didn't know about UHF channel 37 being unused until about 20 years ago or so and I was quite amazed! We all know that 37 is used as a channel number on cable television but on a different frequency than UHF.  I've always wondered what was so special with the analog television band ending at UHF channel 83, rather than at 90 or 99? I remember when I was younger I used to hear cellular phone interference between channels 70-83 and eventually that section was cut out on newer televisions sets and dropped down to channel 69 in the last couple of decades of analog television. So why weren't the UHF frequencies for what could of been used for channels 84-90 or even 99 never existed for over the air television?

Frankly, I wasn't even aware there were any analog transmitters still up and running, but the CRTC has approved Bell's request to shut down its 28 remaining such sticks, located across the country. They essentially rebroadcast various local stations into more remote areas. But Bell indicates they weren't widely viewed, they weren't in HD, there were other ways to get them, and they were costing a lot of money to keep up and running.

There are five in Ontario, with the following list showing the location of the soon-to-be-turned-off TXs, the originating station and the date they're going to be turned off for good.

CITO-TV-2 Kearns (CITO-TV Timmins, Dec. 3,  2021)

CJOH-TV-47 Pembroke (CJOH-DT Ottawa, May 2, 2020)

CJOH-TV-6 Deseronto (CJOH-DT Ottawa, October 9, 2020)

CKCO-TV-3 Oil Springs (CKCO-DT Kitchener, May 2, 2020)

CFNY-TV-11 Huntsville (CICI-TV Sudbury, October 9, 2020)

Is that last one right? The call letters were CFNY-TV? How is that possible?

There was one interesting statement to me in the decision and it comes in these sentences.

"...Licences such as those held by Bell Media are authorizations to broadcast, not obligations to do so. This mean that, while the Commission has the discretion to refuse to revoke broadcasting licences, even on application from a licensee, it cannot generally direct a licensee to continue to operate its transmitters."

So why, exactly, did they have to apply to the CRTC to turn them off in the first place?

To see the complete list of what's being shut down, you can read the CRTC Decision here.

RadioActive wrote:

It was a typo error mistake. It was recently corrected on the CRTC Decision as CKNY-TV-11.

Similar thing to FM Cable. The over-the-air analog FM radio stations use different frequencies on Cable FM to prevent interference if they use the same frequencies as the OTA ones. I can imagine that this would of been a problem in Toronto and southern Ontario due to the crowded FM band. Now living near Kingston, I used to live in the Sudbury area and there was enough room for Cable FM signals because there were less over-the-air stations on the FM band. I dropped Cable TV/FM 20 years ago and I'm wondering if Cable FM still exists in 2021 or has it phased out due to stations streaming online?

Stingray did exactly that. When 93.5 was the Move, no Bell station had that name in use.
With Stingray abandoning the name, it is available for use, but maybe Bell does not wish listeners to associate with the idea that "move is back" when the format is not identical.
(that, or Stingray still holds rights to the name in the Toronto market, possibly...)

There were two "Majic" branded stations in Ontario owned by two different broadcasting companies. The current Corus-owned station "Magic 106.1" CIMJ-FM Guelph, Ontario while Bell Media's former was "Majic 100.3" CJMJ-FM Ottawa. Note the two different spellings in "Magic" and "Majic" but sounded the same with similar call letters.

Very sad to hear the longtime "C-100" (possibly known at some point "Sea 100") branding disappeared from CIOO-FM 100.1 Halifax after nearly 40 years or so thanks to a national corporate company that took over many locally owned and operated and some locally produced radio stations across the country years ago. I'm not talking just Bell Media, I'm talking about other national corporate broadcasting companies. Radio and even television is not the same anymore!
